Netflix released a 36-minute documentary about the Cornell fraternity case on Oct. 29. No one in the case has been charged with a crime. If you are accused and your case becomes content, here is what that publicity can and cannot do.

The film. "Instadocs: Jane Doe v. Cornell" premiered Oct. 29, according to Netflix's own Tudum page, which says it looks at how campus police and Title IX handle assault reports. The people interviewed include Gov. Kathy Hochul, Jane Doe's attorney, Cornell Daily Sun editors and a former Title IX officer.

The coverage. USA Today, via Yahoo News, covered the release, and Fox News focused on Hochul's appearance. Her spokesperson told Fox News that governors routinely speak to the media on matters of significant public interest.

The case behind it. The civil lawsuit alleges a former student was drugged and raped at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024, both outlets report. These are allegations. No one has been criminally charged, Fox News and CT Insider, via Yahoo News, report, and CT Insider says all seven men deny wrongdoing. None of the reports says whether the accused men or their lawyers took part in the film. Facts about the case here come from at least two named outlets unless one is credited.

Why it matters. Publicity does not decide a case. But it reaches the people who might: future jurors, witnesses and campus decision-makers. The law has tools for each.

Her law firm's website explains how defense lawyers frame questions that reveal juror bias.
