**Short answer:** The records list 17 courts-martial charging Article 80 (attempt) at Wheeler Army Airfield from 2021 through 2023\. The median confinement was 11 months, compared with 1.2 years in all Army Article 80 cases. 80% of convicted enlisted members received a punitive discharge, compared with 90% Army-wide.

Based on 17 cases · 2021–2023 · Army records · data updated October 24, 2026

## Article 80 Was Often the Only Charge

In 9 of the 17 cases, Article 80 was charged by itself. Across the Army in 2021–2023, 17 of 115 Article 80 cases had no other charge.

Where other articles appeared, Article 128 (assault) and Article 134 (general article) were each charged in 4 cases. Article 120 (sexual assault), Article 120b (child sexual abuse), and Article 115 (communicating threats) were each charged in 2.

## Shorter Median Confinement

Of 16 convictions, 14 carried confinement. The median term was 11 months, shorter than the 1.2 years in Army Article 80 cases. A quarter of the sentences with confinement were 2.8 years or longer.

These are adjudged sentences, set at trial before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal. A sentence covers every charge in the case.

## Discharges Were Mostly Dishonorable

A punitive discharge followed for 12 of 15 convicted enlisted members (80%). Of those, 9 were dishonorable and 3 were bad-conduct. The Army-wide share for Article 80 cases was 90%.

1 convicted officer or warrant officer appears in the records, and that officer was dismissed. A sentence without a punitive discharge does not rule out a later administrative separation.

## Guilty Pleas Outnumbered Contested Cases

Of the 17 accused, 11 pleaded guilty and 6 contested at least one charge. The contested share was 35%, about the same as the 38% in Army Article 80 cases.

Of the 11 guilty pleas, 9 are recorded with a plea agreement and 2 have no entry. Army records show whether an agreement existed, not its terms.

## Forum and Court Level

A military judge alone decided guilt in 14 of 16 cases with the forum listed (88%). Members heard the other 2, both enlisted panels.

General courts-martial made up 88% of the cases (15 of 17), and special courts-martial made up the rest. A general court-martial can impose long confinement and a dishonorable discharge.

## Rank of the Accused

Junior enlisted members (E-1 to E-4) were 53% of the accused, NCOs were 41%, and officers were 6%. In Army Article 80 cases, junior enlisted members were 60%.

## When the Trials Happened

The trials ran from June 2021 to December 2023, with 4 in 2021, 5 in 2022, and 8 in 2023\. They were 24% of the 72 courts-martial at Wheeler Army Airfield in those years. The services had to begin publishing trial records under Article 140a by December 2020, and Army records in this data are sparse before 2021.

## What Is Missing

Trial dates appear in the records, but offense dates do not. The records also leave out the evidence, the plea terms, and cases handled by nonjudicial punishment or administrative separation.
