**Short answer:** The records list 17 courts-martial at Mayport, Florida in 2020\. Contested cases made up 65%, compared with 30% across the Navy and Marine Corps. Of 12 convicted enlisted members, 4 received a punitive discharge (33%), compared with 62% service-wide.

Based on 17 cases · 2020 · Navy and Marine Corps records · data updated October 24, 2026

## Most Accused Contested a Charge

Of the 17 cases, 11 were contested and 6 ended in a guilty plea. The contested share of 65% was higher than the 30% in the Navy and Marine Corps as a whole.

Full acquittals came in 36% of the 11 contested cases that reached a verdict, close to the 34% across the service. Another 1 was a partial acquittal, with a finding of not guilty on at least one charge and guilty on another.

## Fewer Punitive Discharges

Of 12 convicted enlisted members, 4 received a punitive discharge: 3 bad-conduct discharges and 1 dishonorable discharge. Across the Navy and Marine Corps, the share was 62%.

The year also includes 1 convicted officer or warrant officer, who was dismissed. Dismissal is the officer equivalent of a punitive discharge. A sentence without a punitive discharge does not rule out a later administrative separation.

## Confinement

Confinement was part of 69% of the 13 convictions. The median confinement was 7 months, compared with 6 months in the rest of the Navy and Marine Corps. A quarter of the sentences with confinement were 9 months or longer.

These are adjudged sentences, before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal.

## Charges

All 17 records list charges. Article 128 (assault) appeared in 7 cases (41%), compared with 36% across the service. Article 112a (drug offenses) appeared in 4 cases (24%), compared with 30%. Article 81 (conspiracy) appeared in 3 cases (18%), compared with 7%.

Article 134, Article 92, Article 120, Article 107, and Article 131b (obstructing justice) each appeared in 2 cases (12%). A case with several articles counts under each one.

## What the Records Leave Out

The records cover only cases that reached a court-martial. They do not describe the evidence or the plea terms. Navy and Marine Corps records before December 2020 often omit the plea and forum.

The records give trial dates, not offense dates, and they do not show cases handled by nonjudicial punishment or administrative separation.
