Based on 19 cases · 2019–2023 · Navy and Marine Corps records · data updated October 24, 2026

## Full Acquittals in Contested Cases

A full acquittal means the accused was found not guilty of every charge. At Mayport, 8 of the 14 contested cases that reached a verdict ended in a full acquittal (57%). That was higher than the 49% in all Navy and Marine Corps Article 128 cases in 2019–2023.

Another 3 contested cases ended in a partial acquittal. In a partial acquittal, the accused is found not guilty of at least one charge or specification but guilty of another.

## Most Accused Pleaded Not Guilty

The records show 14 not-guilty or mixed pleas and 5 guilty pleas. A case counts as contested when the accused pleads not guilty to at least one charge. The contested share, 74%, was higher than the 40% across Navy and Marine Corps Article 128 cases.

## Sentences for the Convicted

Of the 19 cases, 11 ended in a conviction, and 10 of those sentences included confinement. The median confinement was 7 months, close to the 6-month median for all Navy and Marine Corps Article 128 cases in 2019–2023\. Among the sentences with confinement, a quarter were 9 months or longer.

These are adjudged sentences, before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal. Each covers every charge in the case.

## General Courts-Martial Were Common

Mayport tried 14 of these cases at a general court-martial and 5 at a special court-martial. The general court-martial share, 74%, compares with 52% in all Navy and Marine Corps Article 128 cases. A general court-martial can impose any lawful sentence, while a special court-martial caps confinement at one year.

## Assault Alongside Sexual Assault Charges

In 11 of the 19 cases, at least one other article was charged. Article 120 (sexual assault) appeared in 6\. Article 133 (conduct unbecoming) and Article 134 (general article) each appeared in 2, and Article 109 (property damage) and Article 120c (indecent recording and exposure) each appeared in 1.

When an assault charge appears with a sexual assault charge, the assault count can describe part of the same incident.

## Rank of the Accused

Among the accused with rank recorded, 14 were junior enlisted (E-1 to E-4), 2 were NCOs (E-5 to E-9), and 2 were officers or warrant officers. The group was more junior than Navy and Marine Corps Article 128 cases overall, where 63% were junior enlisted.

## Cases by Year and Data Limits

The yearly counts were 3 in 2019, 7 in 2020, 5 in 2021, 1 in 2022, and 3 in 2023\. Assault cases were 28% of the 69 courts-martial at Mayport in 2019–2023.

The records give trial dates, not offense dates, and they do not describe the evidence or plea terms. Navy and Marine Corps records before December 2020 often omit the plea, so plea counts use only records that list one. Cases handled by nonjudicial punishment or administrative separation are not included.
