## Confinement

Confinement was part of 89% of the 18 convictions. The median confinement was 9 months, compared with 6 months in the rest of the Navy and Marine Corps. A quarter of the sentences with confinement were 2.7 years or longer.

These are adjudged sentences. They cover every charge in the case and come before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal.

## Punitive Discharges

A punitive discharge followed 56% of enlisted convictions: 6 bad-conduct discharges and 4 dishonorable discharges. In the rest of the Navy and Marine Corps, the share was 62%.

A sentence without a punitive discharge does not rule out a later administrative separation.

## Rank and Court Level

Among the accused with rank recorded, 13 were junior enlisted members and 5 were NCOs. No officers were tried. This group is more junior than the Navy and Marine Corps as a whole.

General courts-martial heard 9 of the 20 cases (45%), and special courts-martial heard the rest. A general court-martial can impose long confinement and a dishonorable discharge. A special court-martial caps confinement at one year.

## Okinawa and San Diego

Okinawa, Japan tried 23 cases and San Diego, California tried 27 in the same year. The median confinement was 4 months at Okinawa and 6 months at San Diego, both shorter than the 9 months at Kaneohe Bay.

Punitive discharges for convicted enlisted members were 62% at Okinawa and 48% at San Diego. San Diego had a contested share of 15%.
