**Short answer:** Holloman AFB, New Mexico held 28 courts-martial from 2019–2023\. 43% of enlisted convictions included a punitive discharge, compared with 56% Air Force-wide. 36% of cases with a plea recorded were contested, compared with 50% across the Air Force.

Based on 28 cases · 2019–2023 · Air Force records · data updated October 24, 2026

## Fewer Punitive Discharges, More of Them Dishonorable

Of 21 convicted enlisted members, 9 received a punitive discharge. That is 43%, compared with 56% across the Air Force. 6 of those were dishonorable discharges and 3 were bad-conduct discharges. A dishonorable discharge is the more severe of the 2 and can come only from a general court-martial.

The 1 convicted officer or warrant officer was dismissed. Dismissal is the officer equivalent of a punitive discharge. A sentence without a punitive discharge does not rule out a later administrative separation.

## Rank and Court Level

Holloman's accused included 17 junior enlisted members (E-1 to E-4), 10 NCOs (E-5 to E-9), and 1 officer or warrant officer. That mix is more senior than the rest of the Air Force, where 64% of the accused were junior enlisted.

Holloman held 11 general and 17 special courts-martial. The general share was 39%, compared with 53% Air Force-wide.

## Contested Cases and Acquittals

A case is contested when the accused pleads not guilty to at least one charge. Among the 22 records that list a plea, 14 accused pleaded guilty and 8 contested. The contested share was 36%, lower than 50% across the Air Force.

6 of the 28 cases ended in a full acquittal, meaning not guilty on every charge (21%). The Air Force-wide rate was 24%. Air Force records from 2016 to 2019 seldom list guilty pleas, so this rate uses all cases, not only contested ones.

Members heard 36% of the cases with the forum listed: 5 enlisted panels and 5 officer panels. A military judge alone heard the other 18\. The accused usually makes that choice.

## What Sentences Followed a Conviction?

82% of the 22 convictions included confinement. The median was 3 months, compared with 4 months across the Air Force. A quarter of those sentences were 1.2 years or longer.

18% of convictions here included no confinement, compared with 12% across the service. No sentence was 5 years or more. Across the Air Force, 6% of convictions were. These are adjudged sentences covering every charge in a case, before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal.

## Sentences by Court Level

A general court-martial can impose any lawful sentence, including long confinement and a dishonorable discharge. A special court-martial caps confinement at one year and cannot impose a dishonorable discharge.

At Holloman, the 11 general courts-martial had a median confinement of 1.5 years. The 17 special courts-martial had a median of 42 days.

## Which Offenses Were Charged?

Charge lists cover 22 of the 28 cases, and a case with several articles appears under each. Article 112a (drug offenses) was the most common charge, at 41%, the same as the Air Force share. Article 134 (the general article) was charged more often: 27% compared with 21%. So was Article 92 (orders violation): 23% compared with 16%.

Article 128 (assault) was charged at about the service rate: 18% compared with 19%. Article 120 (sexual assault) was charged in 5% of cases, compared with 11% across the Air Force.

Punitive discharges for convicted enlisted members were about the same: 44% then and 43% now. General courts-martial went from 15% of cases to 39%. ## Outside the Scope of These Records

These records cover what reached a courtroom. Nonjudicial punishment, administrative separations, and cases closed without action are not included. Neither are the evidence or any plea terms. Air Force records seldom list charges in full acquittals and do not report plea agreements.
