**Short answer:** Air Force records show 18 trials in July 2017\. Members decided guilt in 56% of them, and 8 of those cases went to officer panels. 3 of the 18 cases ended in a full acquittal (17%), compared with 21% across the Air Force in 2017.

Based on 18 cases · July 2017 · Air Force records · data updated October 24, 2026

## Officer Panels Heard 8 Cases

Members heard 56% of the cases with the forum listed: 2 with enlisted panels and 8 with officer panels. A military judge alone decided the other 8.

The accused usually chooses whether a military judge alone or a panel of members decides guilt.

## Verdicts Across All 18 Cases

3 of the 18 cases ended in a full acquittal (17%). The Air Force figure for all of 2017 was 21%.

From 2016 to 2019, Air Force records rarely list the plea when the accused pleaded guilty. This page therefore counts acquittals against all cases rather than against contested cases only.

## What the Sentences Included

There were 15 convictions, and confinement was part of 73% of them. The median confinement was 4 months, the same as the Air Force median for 2017\. A quarter of the confinement terms were 3 years or longer.

Among convicted enlisted members, 43% received a punitive discharge: 3 bad-conduct and 3 dishonorable. The rate for the Air Force in 2017 was 51%. The month's 1 convicted officer or warrant officer was dismissed.

All of these are adjudged sentences, before any plea-agreement cap, clemency, or appeal. A sentence with no punitive discharge does not rule out a later administrative separation.

## Article 134 Up, Drug Charges Down

15 of the 18 records list the charges, and each article counts once per case. Article 112a (drug offenses) appeared in 6 cases (40%), lower than the 52% for the Air Force in 2017.

Article 134 (general article) appeared in 5 cases (33%), higher than the 21% for the year. Article 92 (failure to obey order or regulation) appeared in 4 (27%, compared with 17%).

Article 120 (rape and sexual assault), Article 128 (assault), and Article 120b (rape and sexual assault of a child) appeared in 2 cases each. Article 127 (extortion) and Article 111 (drunken or reckless driving) appeared in 1 each. Air Force records rarely list charges in full acquittals.

## A More Senior Group

9 accused were junior enlisted members (E-1 to E-4), 8 were NCOs (E-5 to E-9), and 1 was an officer or warrant officer. Across the Air Force in 2017, 61% of the accused were junior enlisted.

General courts-martial made up 33% of the month (6 of 18), and special courts-martial made up the rest. A special court-martial is limited to one year of confinement and cannot impose a dishonorable discharge. A general court-martial can impose any lawful sentence.

## Rules and Records

These trials came before the Military Justice Act of 2016 took effect on January 1, 2019\. The later changes to panel sizes, judge-alone special courts-martial, and written plea agreements did not apply to them.

The records show trial dates but not offense dates. They do not describe the evidence or plea terms, and they leave out nonjudicial punishment and administrative separations. Air Force records never report plea agreements.
