House Judiciary Committee Democrats released a report Monday that includes a former beauty pageant contestant's allegation that President Donald Trump raped her in 1993. The White House denies it. The allegation is more than 30 years old, which raises the question anyone facing an old accusation asks first: can it still go to court?

The report. Committee Democrats released it Monday, according to Time, Spectrum News and Newsweek. Spectrum News and Newsweek say it covers accounts from 11 women. Time and Spectrum News report that five of them accuse Trump of rape or sexual assault. Newsweek notes these are conclusions of the Democratic staff, not findings of the full committee or of any court.

The 1993 allegation. The woman says the encounter happened in a suite at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan after a pageant event, Time and Spectrum News report. Both say she alleges Trump told her to stay quiet and promised help getting into New York University. The outlets differ on wording: Time and Spectrum News describe the allegation as rape, while Newsweek calls it sexual assault. These are allegations only.

The response. White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis said "None of these allegations are true," according to Spectrum News and Newsweek. All three outlets report the White House called the report a desperate attempt by Democrats to distract Americans.

The demand. Rep. Jamie Raskin, the committee's top Democrat, wants the Justice Department to appoint an independent special counsel, Time and Spectrum News report.

Why it matters. Deadlines decide whether an old allegation can reach a courtroom. They do not decide whether it reaches the news. Facts here appear in at least two of these reports unless one outlet is named.
